I met him at the Baroness Boel's house. That was the place where she'd gone out in the garden and chopped down the rhododendron bushes to make a little fire, so that the Americans could have a little fire for their lunch. There wasn't anything else to burn. There wasn't a stick of fuel anywhere of any kind. It was terrible. They were already beginning to operate the mines, but they had not been able to operate the mines. I mean, the Germans had flooded them, you know. It was a terrible job to get the mines operating again.

What did you find in Holland?

I went to Antwerp, you see, after I'd been in Brussels. I went to Antwerp, and there we met Camille Huysmans who was a most illuminating and rewarding personality. And of course, there you saw the great destruction which the War had wrought in the port, but you also saw, again, the pick-up of the natural business, of that area. And one of the great bits of business, of course, is the diamond cutting. And you know that diamond-cutting center was going full blast. I said, “Where did they have the diamonds?”

Diamonds would be easy to hide, I should think.

Well, but they're great rocks, you know. They're

the uncut ones, you see. They cut them there, and market them.
