That whole area there had been dreadfully fought over, and them buildings destroyed. They had a dreadful time. That was their big industrial center, insofar as they had much industry. Their flower-raising industry was almost destroyed, which had been a very great asset to them, because the Germans had let in the salt water. They had flooded the fields where the tulips and hyacinths grow and mature. That was being pumped out. They were working away at it, pumping it out, working overtime.
