And of course we achieved it within two years. Was it a year and a half? Anyway, the transition period was very short.

Well, you see, he'd had all these committees working all through the War--civilian committees working on the economy, on the planning for the economy, and I think we'd done a very good job--I mean all the plans for settling the debts quickly, and for pushing in the delayed orders, and utilizing the dismissal pay of people to buy the non-durable consumers' goods--get those into operation, get the building program into operation. The plans were all laid. They were all on ice, ready to operate.

So he had thought of all that. I don't think he had thought of the United States as a changed country at all, but he had thought of it as going on in the same pattern of the New Deal, you see, and making the necessary adjustments for the people--but believing that they could have sixty million jobs, and that if you had sixty million jobs, you didn't have to worry about the economy. It would take care of itself. It would be a productive economy, and it would be an economy in which businessmen had courage to go ahead and do various things.
