Henry Stimson looks old and haggard, doesn't he? I think it was a dreadful blow to him, and he was getting on in years and couldn't take much more.

Jim Forrestal is very characteristic, as he looks a little pugnacious, and considerably upset. Ed Stettinus certainly has a poker face on. I know he's looking out of the side of his eyes at Mr. Stone. My, it's a shocking picture.

Do you happen to remember when and how you learned of the President's death?

I was in my office in the late afternoon. As a matter of fact, I was talking with Otis Milliken of the State Department at that time about the agenda and program and selection of delegates for the I.L.O. conference. It was past office hours. The building had cleared out. I mean, the people in the building had gone, except for Miss Jay. She was there and one or two others who were working late, but the general run of the mill of people had gone home.
