He recited the prayers for the dead, and he recited the proper psalms for the dead and all that. It was really comfort. Almost immediately, we were on our knees, praying for our friend.

After the service, we came down to the Carleton. That was when we met Taussig, and it was then--by then it was 9:00 o'clock or so--that he said, “Come up and have a bite of food.” We did. We had a good little supper, and we felt better. Naturally, you know--you do feel straightened out.

Then we started to go home after a while. I think I told Delaney, the chauffeur, he could go. He needn't wait because I didn't want to keep him hanging around. He was all shot to pieces too, you know. He had his own emotions, and he had to telephone his wife and tell her, and they had to have a good Irish cry about it, don't you know.

The lobby of the hotel was crowded. And the streets of downtown Washington were beginning to fill up. It was as though people couldn't go home--or if they were home, they'd come downtown--not that they expected anything to happen, but with the sense of being closer to the situation.

So we came out of the Carleton. We walked a bit, thinking to hail a taxicab somewhere, but we walked over to the White House as everybody else was doing. We circled around it, on the south side there. The streets were full of
