swearings-in, very fancy ones, which we'd never had before except at Louis Johnson's swearing in. That was later, though. That was out of this world. Hannegan and Clark and somebody else swore in with great eclat. But they at least swore in in their own Departments, and were sworn in by the chief clerk of their Department. Clinton Anderson, too. I went to all three of them, and they were sworn in in the Departments, and by the chief clerk of that Department, and with the staff and personnel of the Department around them, and of course their private friends too.

There was a platform erected, and there was a microphone. There were flowers everywhere, all arranged like for a funeral, piled up against the wall. Oh, very fancy. Speeches about the new officer, speeches by him, resolutions of performance. They had quite a time. But you know, it made sort of an impression, and I said to myself, “Well, this is just a different breed of cats, that's all. They're going to do things that way.”

Mr. Schwellenbach, of course, missed all that, although he had been well photographed on the Hill. There had been a photographer there and he had been photographed, this way and that way, being sworn in by Sherman Minton. So that was sufficient.
