This big strong man?

For some reason or other, the fact that there was a strike would make me laugh. You know, there couldn't be a strike if there was a big strong man there, but there was a strike, and some of them were very pernickety, very difficult. Oh, they were just dreadful ones.

Did you ever again have any communication from Schwellenbach on any subject?

I don't think so. He died in office--I forget how long after--I think he was in for two years. I think that they held the Interstate Conference on Labor Legislation that year, as usual. I don't recall being at it or being asked to it. I may have been. I don't think I was, because I would have been in Europe at that time. That would have been held in November. That was the usual time for it, and I would have been in Europe, so I'm sure I wasn't asked. But I may have been asked to the second one. It's just barely possible. Mr. Schwellenbach himself did not attend those conferences. He wasn't much interested in them, and he didn't go to them. Of course I heard the most terrific rumors that people would insist on coming to tell me, about what was going on in the Department of Labor.
