ready by the fifteenth of May, that'll be fine.” And on the fifteenth of May it was mailed to them.

Well, of course, I don't mean to say that was the end of it. There were some editorial changes, and they did some editing--oh, you know, they always do. That's what the publishers are for. They edit a little--they want this put over here, and they think that will be better put somewhere else.

Interviewer:

Did they make any significant changes?

Perkins:

No. Not significant changes. There were no changes made except in the order of things and in the developing of one theme a little more.

For instance--now this is very interesting--while Taubman was working here, he said, “This is an awfully good book. This is very interesting. I'm an old hand at reading books, but I found myself really interested in this, although I recognize that it's redundant, as you say it is. But,” he said, “there's so many things you've left out! You don't say anything at all about so many things that I would have supposed you'd know about. Didn't the President ever talk to you about politics?”

“Oh, yes!” I said. “Why, of course. He said this and this and this...”
