Mailing List Information

The Science & Technology Network has its own mailing list through Columbia University. The list is open to anyone with interests in Science & Technology. As we are just beginning as an organization it is impossible to know what kind of content will be most prominent in the list but undoubtedly the list will include event announcements for Columbia University and New York, links and info on new technology, and hopefully some debate and discussion about important issues in the field. The list will probably not be able to get too technical because of the inclusive and cross-discipline nature of the group.

Guidelines for Posting to the List

How to Subscribe to the List:

Send a message to:

stn-list-request@columbia.edu

with the word "subscribe" in the body of the message (subject is ignored). You will get a confirmation email with instructions on how to confirm your desire to join. When you subscribe to the list in this manner, you will receive emails as they are posted to the list.

How to Unsubscribe from the List:

Send a message to:

stn-list-request@columbia.edu

with the word "unsubscribe" in the body of the message (subject is ignored). You will be unsubscribed from the STN list. You may join again at a any later date. Note that you should unsubscribe from the list if you wish to subscribe to the digest version of the list (see below).

Do not try to unsubscribe by sending a message to stn-list@columbia.edu!! Your message will be sent to all list members.

How to Post a Message to the List:

Remember, your message will be sent to all members. See below for some general guidelines on posts to the list. If you fail to observe these guidelines repeatedly you will be warned and if the warnings are not heeded, you can be removed from the list.

How to Subscribe to the Digest List:

The digest is a version of the STN list which is only sent out at certain intervals. This way you do not receive an email whenever something is posted to the list but only when a set size of combined messages has been reached. This will reduce email traffic for the subscriber. If you are already subscribed to the list normally, unsubscribe and re-subscribe with the instructions below. Otherwise you will receive duplicates.

Send a message to:

with the word "subscribe" in the body of the message (subject is ignored). You will receive a request for confirmation with instructions on how to confirm. After confirmation you will be subscribed to the digest version of the STN list.

How to Unsubscribe from the Digest List:

If you would like to leave the list or unsubscribe in order to re-subscribe to the non-digest version of the list then send a message to:

stn-list-digest-request@columbia.edu

with the word "unsubscribe" in the body of the message (subject is ignored).

How to Contact a Human For Help with the List:

Send your questions about the list to:

owner-stn-list@columbia.edu or for digest subscribers owner-stn-list-digest@columbia.edu

This will be forwarded to the moderator for the list. You may also send questions to stn@columbia.edu if you like.

Guidelines for Posting on the STN List

Please keep in mind the following guidelines as you post to the list:

• Please don't send attachments. You may of course upload your file via ftp and send the link to the file via the list.
• Please don't send HTML mail to the list. Many users can't read HTML mail in their email client, have the feature turned off, or cannot view the HTML in digest form. Also, HTML tags add to the size of the mail which inconveniences those with slow connections.
• NO SPAM. Do not send blatant advertising to the list. This can lead to removal from the list without warning. It is of course permissable to mention events on campus or in New York relevant to our interests, mention research projects or products made by students and faculty at Columbia in order to invite comment and support, but I think everyone can make intelligent decisions about where the line needs to be drawn. If you are in doubt, send a message to owner-stn-list@columbia.edu for advice.
• Keep announcements short and accurate. Please don't make huge announcements for events. The date, time, and place should be included perhaps a web link for more information.
• Send personal messages to the user, not the list. Please look carefully at the email address in your "To:" field. If you want to send to the list, send to the list, if you want tosdto one person on the list, put only their email in the header of your email. If you make a mistake, don't feel the need to post a "sorry" message and if you do post one, just put a one-line "oops, goofed" or some such. Almost everyone makes this mistake once or twice.
• Stay on topic. This is a list for the discussion of Science & Technology related topics, not sports or politics. If other list members voice their collective desire to move a discussion off-list, consider continuing the debate via personal email.
• Use appropriate language and show respect to your fellow list members. Insults, condescending remarks, and character attacks in general will not be tolerated. Lively discussion is encouraged but be respectful. Also, since the list is very cross-disciplinary, there are no "stupid" questions.
• Don't send unsubscribe requests to the list. See above for instructions on unsubscribing. No one wants to read your attempts to unsubscribe.

Repeat offenders can be removed from the list. Thank you for keeping this guidelines in mind as you post and we can build a supportive and friendly mailing list community.
