| Northeastern Thailand No information yet. I have never been there. I know that there are many beautiful ancient palaces there such as Prasart Hin Pimai. Prasart hin means a rock castle. All of the prasart hin were built over a thousand years ago roughly about the same age as the famous Angor Wat. By the way, if you would like to visit Angor Wat, you have to enter it from the Thai border. Beware of looters there. Two most famous cities in the northeastern part of Thailand are Nakorn Rachasima and KHON KAEN. These two cities are very famous for thai sausages and thai papaya salad (som tum) (shown below). The most famous kind of som tum is "som tum pla ra" and "som tum kai yang". you should give it a try. Mukdaharn also has the best vietnamese restaurants in the country as well. |

Southern Thailand
The southern part of Thailand is connected to the sea on both sides: Andaman see on the west and Gulf of Thailand on the east. The south has one long mountain as the backbone of the region. The south has a lot of rain all year round. However, most of the time, the rain comes in the morning and at in the evening for a short period of time (e.g. half an hour). There are only two seasons in the south of Thailand. - the northeast and the southwest monsoons. During the May to October perio, the southwest winds bring heavy rains to most of the region. From November to April, on the other hand, the same area is left relatively cool and dry. Therefore, it is wise to visit the south from November to April. I have been to the south once, and I love it very much. The Andaman sea is a wonderful place for beaches and diving. There are many little islands roughly a few hours from Phuket, Trang, Satool, and Krabi such as Koh Kradarn, Koh Hin Dang, and Koh Hin Maung. Simiran is considered a world famous place for diving. Most of the islands are very beautiful. There is an island that you have to swim inside the cave when the water is not so high in order to see the inside of the island. This cave is called the Emerald cave. You can see that the color of the water is emerald from the picture below. Inside the cave is like inside a volcano. I couldn't take the picture of it because my camera is not that good. You gotta see it. During holidays season, this place is packed with more than 500 people. Regarding the food, southern dishes are mostly seafood. However, you have to be very careful because your stomach may not be accustomed to the food. Make sure you take some medicine everytime you have some raw food there. Just a little more notes, Trang is very famous for the chinese food. Surathani is famous for oyster. Yala is famous for salty eggs.

Bangkok (Krungthep)
Bangkok is my home town. I have left Bangkok for the United States since 1995 but I still visit there once a year. Bangkok is considered metropolitan because it has more than 5 million people. Mass transportation has just been built in Thailand: sky train and subway system. Bangkok used to have a lot of canals. Those canals are converted to roads later on when people do not see the advantage of rivers anymore. Traffic is the biggest problem in Thailand. Thailand has no regulation on how many cars should be allowed on the street. Not only traffic jam is a problem, pollution is a very big problem as well. A vicious cycle occurs when people do not want to be exposed to the pollution, they decide to buy cars. The consequence is that people are prone to allergies much more than before. If you just disregard the pollution, Bangkok is a very nice city to live in. Thai food is great and Thai people are very nice. You can find all region of Thai food in Bangkok as people from all over the country come to Bangkok to work. During Thai holidays, those people left Bangkok like a ghost town. My home is near the center of the old city (Ratanakosin). The old city was established in 1382 (2325 Thai year) after Krung Tonburi era. Its border is determined by the distance from the Grand Palance. A lot of Chinese people live in the old city as the early Kings of Thailand wanted to improve the economy by trading with the Chinese and westerners. You can see a lot of western style buildings near the Grand Palace. Indian and Persian style building at Pahurat. Chinese style buildings at Yaowarat (Chinatown). A majority of Bangkokians have Chinese blood including me. This is also due to a large number of Chinese immigrants during World War II. Nowadays people tend to live outside the center of the city and drive to the inner city (Silom) to work. Bangkok is quite busy and messy but it is fun to drive around (please.. don't walk.. you can die of the pollution and the heat). Most teen activities are shopping, watching movies, drinking, and street racing at night (visit major bridges and highway). I am going to recommend many places you should visit in Bangkok other than department stores. They are "Prateenung Vimanmek" or "Vimanmek palace", "Wat Pra Keaw" or the grand palace, "Prateenung Anuntasamakom" if they open, "Wat Arun", "Wat Poh" (this temple is famous for Thai tradition massage and a very big Buddha in sleeping position), and the famous "water market". If you are interested in shopping, "Jatujak market" is a hot place (really hot) and major department store like Emporium and Central. If you are interested in eating and drinking, there are many restaurant and pubs on Silom road and Sukumvit road.Bangkok Pictures
