Portions related to Master and Doctoral Program Standards*
(c) (3) In senior colleges and universities, except where other standards pertain, at least one faculty member in each instructional program must hold the doctorate in the appropriate field. Each member of the instructional staff is expected to be actively engaged in a study of his professional interests. To be appointed to the graduate faculty, a scholar shall have achieved the doctoral degree or have demonstrated, in other widely recognized ways, his special competence in the field in which he directs graduate students.
(c) (5) Due recognition shall be given to the total responsibilities of the professional staff. Each member must be allowed adequate time to broaden his professional knowledge, for the preparation of course material, for the supervision of teaching, and for the direction of independent study, dissertations, etc., in accordance with his talents and responsibilities.
(e) (3) Credit toward a graduate degree shall be earned only through work designed expressly for graduate students, in their areas of specialization, and enrollment of qualified undergraduates in graduate level courses shall be strictly controlled by appropriate institutional policies. Institutions shall establish prerequisites for this work when necessary. The filling of deficiencies through undergraduate work may not be given graduate credit.
(e) (4) Research or comparable professional achievement shall be incorporated as an element in graduate programs.
(f) (3) Master's degree programs shall require one academic year of graduate level study or an equivalent that can be shown to accomplish the same goals. The requirements for a master's degree shall normally include one of the following: passing a comprehensive test, writing a thesis based on independent research, or completion of an appropriate special project.
(f) (4) In general, doctoral programs shall require three academic years of graduate level study, or an equivalent that can be shown to accomplish the goals. Doctoral studies shall include the production of a substantial report on research, or the independent investigation of a topic of significance to the field of study, or the production of an appropriate creative work, or the development of advanced professional skills.
