SARPEDON was a son of Zeus by Laodamia. As king of the
Lycians, he was the best warrior among the Trojans' allies. Patroclus killed Sarpedon
against Zeus's wishes, who then sent Sleep and Death to carry him back to Lycia
(Iliad XVI.477-683). Virgil says that Sarpedon was killed before Troy
(Aeneid I.99-101). Boccaccio mentions Sarpedon in a list of Trojan heroes taken
prisoner with Antenor, Il Filostrato (1333-1339) IV.3.
Antenor is taken prisoner despite the valiant efforts of Sarpedon and other heroes,
Tr IV.52. Troilus spends some time with him after Criseyde's departure for the
Greek camp, Tr V.400-501. [Antenor: Moneteso: Polite: Polydamas: Polymestore: Rupheo: Santippe]
Sarpedon occurs medially seven times, Tr IV.52, V.403, 434, 435,
