Conference Objectives

The objectives of this Conference are to:

•  Provide clinical perspectives of college student suicide; discuss the demographics of student suicide; review the Big Ten study; discuss the implications of the most current statistical information related to college student suicide

•  Describe the warning signs of potential college student suicide

•  Present the ethical and legal issues that pertain to college student suicide and respond to the question - does the privacy law go too far by limiting communication of critical information to parents?

•  Review the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA also known as the Buckley Amendment) and discuss its applicability for the university campus and its impact on students and parents/family

•  Describe the role of the university in safeguarding students against suicide and the prevention and management strategies that are currently in place in universities

•  Furnish those who mentor, counsel or provide guidance to students with essential information that will assist them in providing more effective guidance and help them to better identify those at risk and recommend appropriate action

•  Provide educational and resource materials that will enable attendees and others to access key information, regulations and guidelines, necessary to address the issue of college student suicide.
