During the first day of the clerkship:

• It is okay to be disorientated.
• Familiarize yourself with the goals and objectives.
• Look at the master schedule and prepare five index cards with a schedule for each day of the week.
• Read Working on the Wards.

By the third day of the clerkship:

• Start to be oriented.
• Work on presentation skills (Tips & Examples).
• Read Points on the Pediatrc PE and watch the Pediatric PE Video as a means of improving your approach to the PE.
• Work on data synthesis by reading Writing Progress Notes and Admission Write Ups.

Students on Inpatient:

• Orient with your intern.
• Set up your call schedule.
• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Students on Outpatient:

• Set up mentor sessions.
• Work on the core cases in a group.
• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Week 2

• Begin to become oriented.
• Review the Goals & Objectives.
• Focus on your history & physical exam skills.
• Focus on 1 or 2 patients in depth.
• Begin to work on your management skills.

Students on Inpatient:

• Hand in Write-up #1.
• Make an appointment for feedback.
• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Students on Outpatient:

• Begin to work on the EBM project.
• Work on the core cases in a group.
• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Week 3

• In your presentations and notes, begin to move from reporter to editorial writer on a regualar basis.
• Work on improving your depth of knowledge.

Students on Inpatient:

• Hand in Write-up #2.
• Set up mentor sessions.

• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Students on Outpatient:

• Hand in EBM project.
• Finish core cases.
• Orient with your intern.
• Set up your call schedule.
• Do 10 board review questions/week.

Week 4

• Take histories and perform physicals in a focused manner.
• Be able to quickly shift between bullet, SOAP, and formal presentation types.
• Find two opportunities to editorialize.
• Work on your interpersonal skills.
• Take a developmentally appropriate approach (see Outline, Code Card, & Piaget's Stages).

Students on Inpatient:

• Make an appointment for feedback.
• Reflection Piece due.

Students on Outpatient:
