reads, “At a restaurant in Hohenecken 1962. L to R ... Earl Kauffman,
Les Ward, George Stephenson, Jerry Ryan, Jim Riebe, Sam Puleo, and Frankie
Santa Maria. A great bunch of characters.” I didn't know any of these
guys but Hohenecken was a very nice place, just a short walk from the
barracks if you went through the hole in the back fence. As far as I know
there was only one restaurant in Hohenecken then, Gasthaus zum Rathof but it
didn't look like this in 1962; it was small, dingy, and dark. A couple
years later, however, it was replaced by a new, large, bright, and airy
version, but that was in 1964 so I think the caption has the date wrong, and
this is the
terrace
of the renovated Gasthaus zum Rathof. It was re-renovated and expanded
continually since then, eventually becoming a a hotel and conference center.
It closed about 2020 because of the COVID epidemic.
