Afghan Refugees

For nearly 40 years, Afghans have fled to Iran and Pakistan from war and political violence.

In these host countries, some live in segregated refugee settlements, others in urban areas. Some go home for holidays, and return for work, school, and security. Some go back to Afghanistan permanently at times of relative peace.

This year, both Iran and Pakistan are conducting censuses that illuminate the political fallout and statistical repercussions of counting refugees.
