Diary entry by Schenker, dated November 4, 1906 Sonntag, 4.11.06. [...] |
Diary entry by Schenker, dated November 4, 1906 Sunday November 4, 1906 : [...] Publisher Herzmansky (of Doblinger)1 openly admits Director Stritzko’s,2 and also his own, line of thought, which in its unvarnished narrowmindedness and inappropriateness has thwarted the joint3 edition of the Table of Instruments. So my instinct was4 absolutely right, even in the allegedly more practical world of the businessman. © Translation Ian D. Bent 2005. |
COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 Bernhard Herzmansky had been head of the music publishing firm of Ludwig Doblinger since 1876, and was one of the three prime movers (along with Josef Weinberger and Adolf Robitschek) in creating UE in 1901, and a founding shareholder of the new company. 2 Stritzko & Co., Vienna I, Hoher Markt 3, Director Josef Stritzko, existed c.1890–1929, from 1912 on under the proprietorship of Carl Sutter: first mentioned in the diary entries for September 11 and 13, 1906 (OJ 1/5, p.19), and then again September 16, 18, 22, and 24, 1906 (OJ 1/5, p.20), in connection with the Instrumentations-Tabelle, and is later referred to in a draft and final letter to Hertzka, OJ 5/16, [4], December 25, 1908, and WSLB 33, January 1?, 1909. 3 Presumably joint between Stritzko and Doblinger. S first wrote "der gemeinsamen" ("of the joint"), then altered "der" to "die," leaving "gemeinsamen" unchanged. 4 S first wrote "behalten meine Instinkte" ("So my instincts are absolutely right ..."), then changed them.
