Montag 17.2 [:] Baron Alphons|1 dankt für Glückwunsch selbst u. ladet zum Besuch ein. Nun ein Hoffnungsschimmer: vielleicht trägt er wieder u. genau die Kosten der Cp. – Alle vier Bürgen setzen ihre Unterschriften.

Monday February 17 : Baron Alphons1 thanks [me] personally for [my] congratulations, and invites [me] for a visit. Now a glimmer of hope: perhaps he will again bear the full costs of Counterpoint. All four guarantors put their signatures.

1 Baron Alphons von Rothschild, former piano pupil of S in the 1890s, and at this time his principal sponsor. He had previously paid 4,300.30 Marks, the publishing costs of Harmonielehre: see OJ 1/5, p.27, November 22, 1906; OJ 12/27, [1], November 26, 1906; CA 57, November 23?, 1906. He did eventually pay 4,592.65 Marks, the publication costs of Kontrapunkt: see OJ 9/31, [33] = CA 144, March 13, 1911; a draft letter of thanks from S to Rothschild exists: Federhofer, Nach Tagebüchern, p.24.
