Typed letter from Emil Hertzka (UE) to Schenker, dated October 29, 1908 [UE letterhead] Wohlgeboren Sehr geehrter Herr professor ! Mit besten Grüssen © Universal Edition A.G., Wien. |
Typed letter from Emil Hertzka (UE) to Schenker, dated October 29, 1908 [UE letterhead] Professor Heinrich Schenker, Esq. Dear Professor, As you will have seen, your Instrumentation-Tabelle has by now appeared, so we have been able to adhere to the November deadline.1 I hope that you are happy with the way it has turned out. I have been away for 8–10 days, and found your last letter only upon my return. It is of no great importance for us to speak in person;2 but if you can find the time I would be delighted to be able to welcome you here. I could then report to you that I am negotiating an English translation of your Ornamentik, etc. With best wishes, © Translation Ian D. Bent 2005. |
COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 This is the first "small" edition, presumably to test out the market, especially in schools. UE then went to a "larger edition," of 2,000 copies, and this was delivered on February 6, 1909 (Verlagsdruckbuch UE 1999), and was deemed the "first" edition. (See discussion of edition numbers in later letter.) 2 H first requested a meeting in OC 52/27, October 1, 1908. In WSLB 23, October 14, S stated that he was unavailable, and questioned the need for a meeting, asking whether whatever it concerned could not be dealt with in writing.
