Sehr verehrter Herr Doktor !

Vor allem bestätige ich den richtigen Empfang Ihres gesch. Schreibens,2 sowie Beethoven op. 110, Text und musikalische Analyse und sehe der avisierten Zusendung der Vorbemerkung zur Einführung, sowie der Literatur entgegen.

Ich behalte mir vor, auf Ihr gesch. Schreiben, das ich inmitten von Konferenzen und einer riesigen Abendpost, gar nicht in Ruhe lesen konnte, morgen oder übermorgen zurückzukommen und lasse Ihnen nur noch wunschgemäss 1 Expl. Ihrer ”Chromatischen Fantasie” zugehen.

In aller Eile kann ich es mir aber doch [ left-sidelined by S.in crayon to "Bedauern"] nicht versagen, Ihnen über die gewaltige3 Arbeit, die von Ihnen wieder geleistet wurde, meine freudigste Genugtuung auszudrücken, ebenso aber auch mein herzliches Bedauern darüber, dass4 Ihre physische Kräfte5 und besonders Ihre Augen, infolge der Ueberanstrengung Schaden erlitten haben6. Honored Doctor,

First and foremost, I confirm receipt in good order of your est'd letter,2 as also of Beethoven Op. 110, text and musical analysis, and I look forward to the “Preliminary Remark to the Introduction,” as well as the “Secondary Literature,” of the imminent submission of which you notify me.

I shall defer [reading] your esteemed letter which, with meetings and a mountain of evening mail in the interim, I shall have absolutely no opportunity to read in peace, and get back to it tomorrow or the day after tomorrow, and shall merely, as you request, have one copy of your Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue forwarded to you.

In great haste, [ left-sidelined by S. in crayon to "regret"] I simply cannot however restrain myself from expressing to you my joyful satisfaction at the mighty3 work that you have once again accomplished, and no less so my cordial regret that4 your physical powers5 and in particular your eyes, have suffered damage as a result of your over-exertions.6 [ "!" added by Schenker in pencil ]
