Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor !

In vorzüglicher Hochschätzung
ergebenst
[ sign’d: ] Hertzka

Dear Doctor,

Pursuant to [your] letter in response to the agreement1 over the Beethoven monograph. The next time I encounter Director Bopp, I will endeavor to get some idea of his position on the sonata and the Bach edition.2 It will of course not be possible to reach a final agreement3 earlier than that, for you yourself have rightly admitted that the edition, on the basis that you envision, can be contemplated only with subsidy4 on the part of the Academy.5 There will certainly be no lack of energetic involvement on my part.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] Hertzka

FOOTNOTES

1 i.e. WSLB 70, November 7, responding to the draft contract, OC 52/431, November 6, for the Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie.

2 i.e. the proposal to edit the last five Beethoven piano sonatas, and Book II of the Well-tempered Clavier in alternation year by year, on which see WSLB 69/71, November 1, and OC 52/60, November 5, 1910.

3 i.e. a contract for the last five Beethoven piano sonatas, eventually finalized in OC 52/494, August 25, 1912, entitled there Beethoven's letzte 5 Sonaten.

4 There has been no mention of a subsidy, grant, or subvention in any of the previous correspondence; it was presumably a topic in a meeting between S and H, or between S and Bopp transmitted to H. The subject is to come up many times in correspondence over the forthcoming years.

5 i.e. the Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst = the Vienna Conservatory.

SUMMARY
