Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated November 7, 1910

[ UE document stamp: ] 0005

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor!

Vorläufig also nochmals besten Dank.

Mit ausgezeichneter Hochachtung
Ir ergebener

Dear Director,

Many thanks for your chivalrous attitute!1 With such traits, and the like, on your part, you will always be able to count me among the most enthusiastic of UE’s contributors.

Perhaps it will be easier for you to hear Director’s Bopp’s2 ultimate position regarding the Sonatas, or is what we were going to discuss regarding the annual installment better settled independently of that? In the latter case, I would ask you to work out with me a mutually convenient time for us to meet.

Many thanks once again in anticipation.

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES

1 Presumably in response to OC 52/60, November 5, 1910 combined with the contract for Beethovens Neunte Sinfonie, OC 52/431, November 6, 1910, in which S’s requirements seem mostly to have been met.

2 Wilhelm Bopp [create biogfile and link]. The allusion is to the meeting between S and Bopp regarding this matter, which took place on October 29, 1910, since this clause echoes that in WSLB 68, October 21, 1910, "Might you, since you encounter him frequently, hear direct from him what he thinks about it?" (italics added), following the S/Bopp meeting of the preceding day.

SUMMARY
S thanks H for his "chivalrousness," and inquires as to how to proceed with regard to Bopp and the [Beethoven late piano] sonatas.
