Wohlgeboren [/] Herrn Professor Dr. Heinrich Schenker,

Sehr geehrter Herr Professor !

Wir empfingen heute den 3. Druckbogen Ihres Werkes Beethoven 9.

Professor Heinrich Schenker, Esq.,

Dear Professor,

We have today received the third print-gathering of your work, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, and see with regret that it, too, contains such major new insertions, rearrangements, and alterations within the text that we have to bear significant costs from the printers for what are deemed “heavy corrections,” which we have not foreseen on the basis of your manuscript.

We take the liberty of informing you that we must pass on to you all costs arising out of these “heavy corrections,” and remain

With kind regards,
[ stamp: ] Universal Edition & Co.
[ sign’d: ] Hertzka

N.S.
The printers need the music example recently sent to you,1 in order to continue the setting. Accordingly, we ask you kindly to deal by return with our inquiry of the 16th inst.
