Sehr geehrter Herr Professor !

sehr ergebener

Dear Professor,

As per our legally-entered-upon agreement in re the estate of the late Mrs. Sofie Deutsch,2 I take the liberty of informing [you] that I shall be in a position on the 10th of this month to remit the sum of 2,000,000 Kroner3 to an address to be provided by you. I shall then convey to you the documentation concerning the correct remittance. With greatest respect, I ask you please to notify me of this address.

I take this opportunity also to inform [you] that I shall likewise transfer to you punctually the sum of 1,500,000 Kroner as stipend for musicians,4 which is to be ready for disbursement for the first time on January 5, 1924. Please then be so kind as to inform me what determination you have made as regards this sum.

In conclusion, I take the liberty of bringing to your attention the fact that the Association for Feeding and Clothing Hungry School Children5 also had to take precautions against the event that the Association might be dissolved. Against this event, the {2} decision was reached, with the permission of the court, to transfer upon the dissolution of the Association a quarter of the capital assigned to the Association from out of the estate of the late Mrs. Sofie Deutsch, i.e. circa 74,000,000 Kroner, however, rounded [up] to a sum of 20,000,000 Kroner, to the Academy for Music and Representational Art6, with the request that the yields of this capital be used in the spirit of Mrs. Sofie Deutsch’s will as stipend for musicians, and to leave to you, dear Professor, for your lifetime, to dispose to whom these stipends are to be awarded. This latter stipulation is however valid, as mentioned, solely in the event of the Association’s being dissolved. Until that time, 1,500,000 Kroner will be placed at your disposal each year, which is to be disbursed on the death date of Mrs. Sofie Deutsch, thus on January 6[sic], as stipendia for musicians.

In closing, I most respectfully ask you to inform me whether you wish to collect the sum of 1,5000,000 Kroner from my chancellery, or where I should dispatch this sum to.

I should mention in this connection that I shall place this sum at your disposal on January 2, 1924.

I remain, with kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] Dr. Lamberg

FOOTNOTES:

1 Verlassenschaft: Austrian for Hinterlassenschaft, estate, property.

2 Sofie Deutsch, former pupil of Schenker’s, died on January 5, 1917, as notified to S by her brother in OC 12/52, January 12, 1917; however, the implication later in the current letter is that the death-date was January 6.

3 See OJ 10/4, January 26, 1916, in which Mrs. Deutsch expressed the intention of leaving S a legacy of 10,000 Marks to be drawn off in annual sums of up to 3,000 Marks for the purpose of publishing his future works; and OJ 12/52, January 12, 1917, in which this money is reportedly due according to the will in twice-yearly installments of 1,000 Kroner together with a one-off legacy of 5,000 Kroner. (The value of German and Austrian currency had greatly depreciated in the interim.)

4 See OJ 12/52, January 12, 1917, recording that Mrs. Deutsch left a sum of money to be disbursed by S for impecunious composers and composition pupils.
