München hat sich leider wirklich als sehr unbewegliche Stadt erwiesen; Privatkreise sind dort nur sehr wenig an Musik interessiert und alles ist dem Betrieb der Akademie unterstellt. Als einziges positives Resultat kann ich nur verzeichnen, daß mit Hilfe von Freunden ein Vortrag im Odeon zustandegekommen ist: “Das Kunstproblem in der Musik”, in dem ich – an Hand erläuternder Beispiele – die wichtigsten Begriffe in möglichst einfacher Form klarzumachen versucht habe; ich glaube, daß das sehr viel Beifall bei den Zuhörern gefunden hat, wenn es auch natürlich noch nicht imstande war, andauerendes Interesse für später zu erwecken; (2 Schüler hatten sich im Ganzen in Anschluß daran gemeldet)[.] In der Zeitung war eine ausführliche Wiedergabe, die sich aber jeder Kritischen Stellungnahme enthielt (der Name Schenker z. B. war – wiewohl im Vortrag als Ausgangspunkt aufgestellt – nicht erwähnt). So versuch ich es nun in Berlin, wo ich auch einen größeren Bekannterkreis habe und mehr Möglichkeiten geboten werden. Ist es sehr anmaßend von mir, verehrter Herr Doktor, wenn ich Sie um ein Paar empfehlende Zeilen bitte, die mir hier– vor allem bei Furtwängler1 – von großem Nutzen sein könnten; gleichzeitig möchte ich Ihnen ausrichten, daß sich Herr Dr Zuckerkandl,2 den ich hier aufgesucht habe, Ihnen bestens empfehlen läßt. Handwritten letter from Jonas to Schenker, dated November 17, 1930 Berlin, November 17, 1930 Highly esteemed Doctor! Munich has unfortunately proven itself a very unresponsive city; private circles there are only very little interested in music, and everything is under the administration of the academy. As the single positive result I can cite only the fact that with the help of friends a lecture in the theater has been given: “The Art-Problem in Music,” in which I tried, with reference to illustrative examples, to make clear the most important concepts in the simplest possible form; I believe that this attempt has been met with much approval on the part of the audience, even though it was naturally not in a position to awaken abiding interest for later; (2 students from the lot had announced interest in further study). A detailed report appeared in the newspaper, which however avoided any critical appraisal (the name Schenker, for example – although represented in the lecture as point of departure, – was not mentioned). So now I will try it in Berlin, where I also have a larger circle of acquaintences and more possibilities will be offered. Is it terribly presumptuous of me, dear Dr. Schenker, if I request a few lines of recommendation from you, which could be greatly useful to me here – especially with Furtwängler1 –; may I at the same time convey to you that Dr. Zuckerkandl,2 whom I have sought out here, sends you his warmest greetings.
