Handwritten letter from Schenker to Jonas, dated February 14, 1928

Geehrter Herr Dr Jonas!

Handwritten letter from Schenker to Jonas, dated February 14, 1928

Dear Dr. Jonas,

I have just now received a letter from Vrieslander,1 as reply to my report on our conversation. He argued more insistently than I that the journal2 would have to be “guaranteed” through and through even for five years (not just for three years), otherwise the “humiliation” would be irreparable and much more injurious for our cause than you may think! I know that you wouldn’t want to be responsible for such humiliation for either Dr. Weisse3 or me, especially as you and your cousin4 could not profit thereby. {2} So, cui bono? Repeat this, please, to Dr. Weisse as well, and think the plan over many, many times.

Without an unstinting guarantee for years hence, such a thing cannot be done at all; the field would be left as though open and easy for opponents, your seriousness of purpose betrayed to that ridicule. It could be done only with a full briefcase. Do you see that anywhere? I don’t.5 Mr. van Hoboken6 is the last who should be approached with such an unreasonable request; he bears very great expenses for the Archive7 and for the travels that are necessary to persuade reluctant private owners. {3} That he should cultivate and attend to all fields of the work is not to be expected. That is my view, which I request that you communicate also to Dr. Weisse, whom I will not be able to see until April, with the Hobokens.

Many thanks for your thought and effort:
Yours,
[sign’d:] H. Schenker
