[Universal Edition] Haydn's, Mozart's, Beethoven's, and in particular C. P. E. Bach's ornamentation is treated exhaustively and vividly in the just published second, enlarged edition of Schenker's A Contribution to Ornamentation.1 This interesting publication from Universal Edition, which has also been adopted by the curriculum of the Imperial-Royal Academy of Music in Vienna,2 will shortly appear in English translation.3 The modest price (2 Kroner 40 Heller) facilitates the wide and general dissemination that the work deserves.

COMMENTARY:

FOOTNOTES:

1 The first edition was released in 1903, and the second edition in 1908.

2 The old private Conservatory of Music of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde had become a public institution, the K. K. Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst, on January 1, 1909, and Universal Edition had for some months been heavily involved in planning to provide editions and manuals for the new curriculum.

3 No English translation was produced in Schenker's lifetime.
