Sehr geehrter Herr !

Bestens dankend zeichne
Hochachtungsvoll ergeben

Dear Sir,

Dr. Max Graf, critic of the Österreichische Rundschau in Vienna1 has asked me (after the paper itself had solicited you unsuccesfully regarding my book) to encourage you to have a review copy sent to the paper in question. Since the Österreichische Rundschau (publishers Alfred von Berger and Glossy2) is not in our estimation to be sneezed at, I support his request—if, that is, you in fact provide review copies.

With many thanks, I remain,
With kind regards, Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 Max Graf (1873–1958), influential Austrian music critic who, as part of his degree at the University of Vienna had, like S, studied harmony there with Bruckner, and from 1902 taught music aesthetics at the Vienna Conservatory, serving also as music critic for several prominent journals and newspapers. He was an advocate of Mahler, Schoenberg, and other young composers. Only two letters (undated) from him to S survived.

2 Alfred Freiherr von Berger (1853-1912), professor of philosophy and aesthetics in the University of Vienna, and theater director. Carl (Karl) Glossy (1848-1937), archivist of the Vienna municipal collections, and editor, biographer and editor of the letters of Grillparzer.
