Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Gef.3 Antwort erbeten an Ihrem

Hochachtungsvoll ergebenen

Handwritten letter from Schenker to Emil Hertzka (UE), dated Tuesday November 24, 1908

Dear Director,

So be it,1 and the work of my own that I do before lessons will have to give way. Would you like to see me on Friday morning [November 27], but so that I can leave your office no later than 10:15. (I reckon it [takes] a good half an hour by tram2 and on foot, and must be back home by 10:45 at the latest to receive a female student.) You will best know the appropriate tram stop, and I will be at your disposal until 10:15.

The favor of3 an answer requested, to

Yours truly,

FOOTNOTES:

1 In reply to H's firm request in OC 52/29, November 23, for a meeting to discuss large new edn of Niloff. Surely there is a hint of "Muß es sein?—Es muß sein!" (Beethoven, Op.135).

2 Tram = streetcar/trolley. We know that S disliked taking the Städtische Straßenbahn—part of his larger distaste for modern technology. He would presumably walk Reisnerstraße—Heumarkt—Johannisgaße, board the tram on the Kaiser-Wilhelm Ring, ride it round the Ringstraße, alight at the junction of the Schotten Ring and Wipplingerstraße, and walk down to UE's address in the latter. The tram fare per stage of the Ring in 1914 was 14 Heller.
