Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Soeben aus Tirol heimgekehrt, gelange ich in den Besitz der 100 Kr., die Sie mir als „Niloff“ zudachten.1 Indem ich dies bestätige u. meinen Dank ausspreche, drängt es mich auszusprechen, daß es nach wie vor meine festeste Überzeugung ist, es würden gerade die „IX Sinf.“ u. die „3 letzten Sonaten“ früher oder später das denkbar beste Geschäft, eben ein ewiges, abgeben, wovon Anzeichen Sie ja nicht ....der[?] wie ich selbst schon bemerken dürfte. Erst vor kurzem ist es mir gelungen, den 2. Kontrapuntksband abzuschließen – in voriger Saison hatte ich Hindernisse über Hindernisse!– nun letzte Bereinigungen noch[?] u. Einfügung der zahllosen Aufgaben u. Beispiele u. was dergleichen mehr u. dann zu Cotta.2 Das Weitere wird sich wohl erst dann sehen lassen.

Dear Director,

Upon arriving home from the Tyrol, I find waiting for me the 100 Kroner that you promised me for Niloff.1 In confirming receipt of this with gratitude, I feel compelled to declare that it remains my firmest conviction as hitherto that precisely my Ninth Symphony and Last Three Sonatas would sooner or later prove to be the best business prospect imaginable, indeed something permanent of which you ought by now unquestionably[?] to have discerned the signs, as have I. Only recently have I been in a position to finish the second volume of _Counterpoint_—last season I faced one obstacle after another!—. Now just a few things to tidy up, and insertion of the innumerable exercises and examples and other such things, and then off to Cotta [it will go].2 What comes next will probably only then reveal itself!

Artur Niloff [pseud. for Schenker], Instrumentations-Tabelle (Vienna: UE, 1909), the third edition (1,000 copies) of which had gone to press on June 26 and been delivered on September 3, 1917 (UE Verlagsdruckbuch 1999). The 100 Kroner presumably represented S’s 10% contractual royalty.

2 The MS of Kontrapunkt2 was delivered to Cotta on October 4, 1920 (CA 180 and OJ 9/31, [45]).

SUMMARY:
Acks receipt of 100 Kroner and expresses belief that the Neunte Sinfonie Beethovens and LfS will prove profitable. Kontrapunkt2 will go off to Cotta soon.
