Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor!

Dear Director,

My dentist was still unable to decide how to trace the cause of the inflammation of the periosteum1 today, let alone provide any relief. [He] booked me in for Tuesday. If the swelling has gone down by then, he will “treat” me, etc.. For this reason, I ask you kindly not to wait for me beyond 9:45 at the latest, since I must be back home around 10:30 in order to receive my female pupil. Thus, if the dentist goes ahead with me, I may possibly not be able to get to you at all. I am letting you know this as a precaution. I myself do not know the exact position. But should I be unable to come, you may perhaps decide, so as not to delay matters any further and in view of the fact that I must be home each morning by 10:30 at latest, to drop me a line about the “details.”2 Or perhaps when you send the proofs for correction?

With kind regards,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker

FOOTNOTES:

1 Periosteum is the membrane around bone, in this case dental. Possibly the periodontal ligament, i.e., the connective tissue around a tooth, is intended here, inflammation of which, formerly called “pyorrhea,” can lead to bleeding gums and ultimately tooth loss. See WSLB 45, October 27, for previous reference to this condition and the delay to a meeting.

2 This quotes directly from OC 52/41 (October 26), which asks for a meeting, then says: “The Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue is finally about to go for printing, and we have a few details to discuss with you regarding it.”

SUMMARY:
S asks H to send him written details in the event that he cannot get to him in time on November 2 because of his dentist's appointment.
