Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated August 8, 1910 [ UE date-stamp: ] 10. AUG. 1910 Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor ! Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated August 8, 1910 [ UE date-stamp: ] 10. AUG. 1910 Dear Director, The second proof1 is on its way to Vienna. I believe that the matter may rest at that, and that a third proof is unnecessary. In an emergency, Mr. von Wöß2 is on top of the situation. Even so, let me tell you that I shall remain at the Karerpass until around the 20th of this month, the 22nd at the latest, and that any question you may have will still safely reach me here up to that time.3 After that, I travel to Stuttgart to discuss with Cotta a “reference library”4 that is very dear to the hearts of both of us, so that I shall not arrive in Vienna until September. The Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue is not really expected before the end of September, is it? In any event, I will let the press have a few addresses on hand, to which the little work should be sent. With kind regards, © Translation Ian D. Bent 2006. |
COMMENTARY: FOOTNOTES: 1 i.e. of the Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue. 2 Click on Josef Venantius von Wöß. 3 One might argue that this letter precedes the letter from Schenker to which Cotta’s incompletely dated OJ 9/31, [26] is a reply, on the grounds that Schenker would be unlikely to plan to stay at the hotel if there had been a fire there. 4 Handbibliothek: the project later to become the Kleine Bibliothek, but for which the monograph on the Ninth Symphony was originally intended to be the first volume.
