Mit besten Dank an Vorhinein.

Dear Director,

I would be much obliged if, rather than on the 14th, you would make available to me one or two days earlier, one single (I repeat, 1)1 copy of the Chromatic Fantasy & Fugue! That’s how urgently I need one.

With grateful thanks in anticipation,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H Schenker

COMMENTARY:
Format: 1-p letter, holograph message and signature, illegible writing in upper and lower margins

FOOTNOTES:

1 sage und schreibe: form used in contracts and agreements, with numerals given before it then the numbers spelt out as words after it (e.g. “1, in words: one”) , as Schenker himself does on occasion; here it is the other way round (“one, in numbers: 1”), giving a faintly comic formality.
