Handwritten letter from Schenker to Hertzka (UE), dated December 6, 1911

Sehr geehrter Herr Direktor !

Dear Director,

Please would you be so kind as to instruct Leipzig1 for future reference that the measure-number indications by me that have been placed at the beginning of a section of text in the Analysis|2 are to be considered as marginal indications, for example like this:

(outer margin)
(text here) . . . . . .bars 71ff.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . .

By this means, the reader has the advantage of having at his fingertips information concerning any bar that interests him.

However, under the heading “Performance” things remain as the printers have done them, i.e. so that the numbers are not marginal numbers.

{2} I shall get the corrected proofs to you within the next few days; nevertheless, I shall write to you about them a little before then, in order to prevent the printers from setting the further gatherings exactly as they have done the first ones.

With best wishes,
Yours truly,
[ sign’d: ] H. Schenker
