Dempsey: How Soldiers Really Vote
View Printable Version

In an article for The New Republic, Jason Dempsey (Ph.D. 08), an infantry officer assigned to the Army's 10th Mountain Division, discusses key findings of his survey of the social and political attitudes of soldiers.  With Professor Robert Shapiro, Dempsey conducted the first and only random-sample survey to canvass enlisted personnel and junior officers as well as their superiors.  Dempsey writes that broadening the survey beyond the officer class "yielded results that fly in the face of the conventional view. The Army, it turns out, is hardly a bastion of right-wing thought."

The article is based on Dempsey's forthcoming book, Our Army: Soldiers, Politics and American Civil-Military RelationsThe entire article can be read here.
