The Leadership Conference on Conservancy and Development

September 12 - 18, 1999 Held in Kunming and Lijiang, China

In September 1999, an international conference on culture and nature conservancy, in conjunction with socio-economic development, was cohosted by the Center and the leadership of Yunnan Province. Funding for this event was provided by The Ford Foundation with supplementary grants from other foundations, including The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. We understand that the conference was the first of its kind. Its conclusion has resulted in a joint initiative towards proposal of long-term strategies for comprehensive conservancy. The Ford Foundation, Yunnan Province, and the Center are currently working towards the formation of an international consortium in collaboration with the provincial government for the execution and monitoring of these strategies. We believe that, subsequently, these strategies will be applied elsewhere in China and, perhaps eventually, worldwide. The Center was host to a number of American institutions during the Leadership Conference on Conservancy and Development, including The Nature Conservancy, World Wildlife Fund, the National Endowment for the Arts, Partners for Livable Communities, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and the Asian Cultural Council.
