This project was initiated the East and Central Harlem community representatives who proposed an "Arts Corridor" which would include Central Park North (110th St.), Fifth Ave from 110th St. to 106th St. and 106th St. from Fifth Ave to Lexington Ave. The five members of our team concentrated in specific areas of interest and utilized elements from the given program as applicable. The combination of the five proposals strives to create a coherent district plan for Central and East Harlem. Each project proposes physical interventions that initiated out of investigations into the existing spatial and aspatial configuration of the neighborhoods. The known and proposed physical dimension is integrally woven with the nonmaterial spirit of the area from which a social/aesthetic/educational/cultural matrix is discovered, nurtured and promoted. The district plan operates at many scales, from the human dimension and textures of the sidewalk, to the local level, linking the neighborhoods of Harlem/East Harlem and reaching out to greater New York City as well demonstrating a worldwide presence. The elements that we are working with include:-breaks through the mask of existing blocks to create continuous flow of natural elements (water, air, trees...) and urban cultural elements (text, music, visual arts...).-define how to enhance the essense of a village through public spaces linked by pedestrian networks-a gardening cooperative to support and intensify the new and existing community gardens.-redesigned boulevard-scaled streets to become vibrant urban promenades-temporary/flexible installations to enhance parade/festival/community activities which cen over time become integrated as permanent urban artifacts supporting daily life activities.-the parade theme uniting both communities while creating a crater of pedestrian activity symbolizing the spine of the whole.-advocate for and build upon the mutual community based Arts incentive-water as art - a waterway through the once existing, still active inlet, from Central Park to the East River- reconfigure and reorient the dissassociative nature of many of the housing projects.STUDY AREAS110th St. from Lenox Ave. to Madison Ave.104th. to 110th.
