File Naming Specification for APIS Images
6/15/98; rev. 12/1/03

Files will have several components separated by periods. Components are not optional.  The general form is:

institution . project . item . f/b . x-y . res . format

where

institution
is always "columbia"
project
is always "apis"
item
is the APIS number assigned by the cataloger with no leading zeros. NB: Papyri images always begin with a "p";  APIS numbers for ostraka do not begin with "o" or any other letter.
f/b
is "f" or "b", and specifies front or back of a document. Use "f" if there is only one side.
x-y
indicates a segment of a document in a grid of maximum size 10x10. coordinates start at 0-0 at the left-top, e.g., 1-2 is the second column and third row. there is no implied scale: the coordinates are used only to indicate placement. if there is no segmentation, use 0.

The grid system is:

0-0 1-0 2-0 3-0 ... 0-9
0-1 1-1 2-1 3-1 ... 9-1
0-2 1-2 2-2 3-2 ... 9-2
0-3 1-3 2-3 3-3 ... 9-3
...
0-9 1-9 2-9 3-9 ... 9-9

Use only as many contiguous blocks as you need, always starting with 0-0.
res
is the resolution in dpi, e.g., "600". when the image is for convenience rather than archive, use resolution "na". for example for a shot of the whole document when there are also multiple segment images.

NB: The original tiff scans should, in each case, be labeled "600"; during the automated derivative-creation process, the correct image resolution will be inserted.
format
is the file encoding (type), e.g., "gif", "tif", "jpg"

Note 1:  All alpha characters must be lowercase.

Examples (made up):

columbia.apis.883.f.0.600.tif
columbia.apis.883.f.0.150.tif
columbia.apis.883.f.0.72.tif
a small piece (ostrakon), with no tiling, at several resolutions
columbia.apis.p5.f.0-0.600.tif
columbia.apis.p5.f.0-1.600.tif
columbia.apis.p5.f.0-2.600.tif
the front of a long vertical papyrus captured in 3 horizontal tiles
columbia.apis.p8.f.0-0.150.tif
columbia.apis.p8.f.1-0.150.tif
columbia.apis.p8.f.2-0.150.tif
