Q:

Can I just go back to Saxe Commins a minute? I'm trying to see how, at those early stages, actually how authority ran in the House. In other words, you were president...

Cerf:

And Donald was vice-president.

Q:

Wasn't Haas vice-president for awhile?

Cerf:

He didn't join us until 1936.

Q:

Well, until then...

Cerf:

Until then it was just the two of us. We were always in one room. We had our desks facing each other.

Q:

Well, then, where was Saxe Commins then?

Cerf:

Saxe was right next door.

The three of us really ran the show with Lou Miller, the sales manager. The four of us were tops in Random House.

Q:

Well, if Saxe Commins ran across something that he wanted to publish, would he come and discuss it with you?

Cerf:

Oh, sure.
