Everybody in Johnson City was going to be there. And Lady Bird stood up and said, “Well, we're very pleased to have the President with us for this occassion, but he's suffering severe throat irritation and won't be able to say a word.” [laughter] This is after I've been listening him screaming at the peacocks. [laughter]

So then you get back there and the daughters are there. The eldest, practically hanging on to him. We have dinner. He says, “Now I got to show you a movie. It's probably pretty dull but I haven't seen it and I just thought we might look at five or ten minutes of it.” And I hear, what's her name? Linda the eldest?

Q:

Linda.

Heiskell:

Linda saying, “Oh Jesus, do we have to do this again?” So he settles down in a great barca lounger [grumph] like that and the movie goes on and it's about his trip to Saigon where he's greeted by everybody and the troops all love him and everybody loves him and he makes a speach. And he sits there absolutely beaming through the whole thing.

I guess so. I guess so. And then as the evening proceedes he begins to discuss the issues that the President faces. Then he has somebody go into the teletype room and he comes back and he reads this and he says, “O.K. you guys, now how would you handle this problem?” This something about Beirut. It was already then
