Herald Tribune.

Q:

Had you ever thought about being a reporter?

Heiskell:

No. What made me think of it was it had nothing to do with business.

Q:

Had you done any writing? How did you get a job--what was the job you got?

Heiskell:

The lowest.

Q:

A copy-boy?

Heiskell:

The Herald Tribune paid--it was just that they paid so badly--they paid you the large sum of $25.00 a week.

Q:

You joined the Herald Tribune in 1936. Do you remember what month?

Heiskell:

June or July. Just as soon as I quit.

Q:

But wasn't it unusual that you could just walk in and get a job? You got a job as a reporter?

Heiskell:

The lowest, city room reporter. The most menial stories.
