Yes. They knew perfectly well that three men killed in Harlem wasn't worth a spit.
Any other Tribune memories before we stop today?
Yes. I'd get on a subway thinking I was going to 86th Street and Lexington and next thing I knew I was somewhere out in Brooklyn. [laughs]
You got lost all the time?
Oh, God! You see, I'd never been to New York. I started work practically immediately with no knowledge of the system.
Why did you want to leave the Tribune?
Money.
Just better job?
I did ask what was my future, and they said, “Well, if you're very good, three years from now you should be making forty dollars.”
At the Tribune, they said this?
