are good for covering war but when peace comes they will not do the job.’”

And then it goes on to say that you had several corrective steps in mind, for example establishing a broad program of action to emphasize the contributions of photography to this world, its value as a method of presenting news, etc. To accomplish this you suggested laundering of the image of photography, a newspaper ad campaign, better promotion on the importance of the job done by photographers. Do you recall this?

Heiskell:

No [laughter].

Q:

You have never read it at all?

Heiskell:

I have absolutely no memory of that [laughter].

Q:

Clearly you were a champion of the photographers!

Heiskell:

Oh, yes! I was a champion of LIFE, and LIFE was a picture magazine. And I do remember having a feeling that we should build up the photographers all the time. And I guess we finally did, because nowadays, going forward forty years, who's remembered from the first 20 or 30 years of LIFE? Only the photographers! Even the managing editors have sort of disappeared into the clouds of the past. But the photographers are all having great shows, their pictures have achieved great value. They can sell their pictures for large sums. I
