Heiskell:

While at Life, or going into Intelligence?

Q:

Either.

Heiskell:

Well, Ed Thompson was involved. He was in the military and he was involved in Intelligence. C.D. Jackson was involved in Intelligence in OWI and, before OWI, he was sent to Turkey to get involved in what was called preemptive buying.

[end of side one; beginning of side two]

Namely, there was some--I forget whether it was Bauxite or some metal that was particularly important that was produced in Turkey. His job was to contract to buy it all so the Germans couldn't buy it all--couldn't buy any of it. I gather he was fairly successful at doing that. [long pause] I can't remember any other specific contacts. They were constantly asking to look through our files for information of one kind or the other, and it always made us a little nervous, they being the government.

Q:

Files on people?

Heiskell:

Things, people, so on and so on.

Q:

What kind of people were they looking for?

Heiskell:

I guess they were trying to find out whether certain people were reliable or not.
