Heiskell:

No. I would use directors to introduce me to potential customers.

Q:

Give me an example. What would an example of that be?

Heiskell:

Oh, I suppose--Gaylord Freeman would give a dinner in Chicago at which he would invite the chairmen of various Chicago companies. That would give me the opportunity to get to know them, and then, at a later date, I would go and call on them, and then at a later date the advertising people would go after them.

Q:

You never served on any other corporate boards than Time Inc. Is that correct?

Heiskell:

No.

Q:

Was that a part of policy, or it was your personal--

Heiskell:

It was a policy originally that Luce believed in.

Q:

The basis being?

Heiskell:

Being that there the conflict you were talking about would be aggravated in that if I were on a board, and Fortune did a very nice story about it, everybody would say, “Well, obviously it was done because he was on the board.” If it was a bad story, the people
