this impressed the hell out of Tom Watson. Tom Watson has always said: “I don't understand why you finally got rid of this. You sold me on the whole idea of three trees behind every share of stock! That's why I own all that Time stock, and now you [laughter]--

Q:

And now you've sold the trees.

Heiskell:

--“Now you've sold the trees, and what have I got?” [laughter].

Q:

Was there anybody at the Time who was saying: “Hey, you're paying much too much?”

Heiskell:

Yes.

Q:

Who was that?

Heiskell:

Hedley. And I think he was right. But--

Q:

But you didn't think he was right at the time? Or I mean, did you--

Heiskell:

Well--[pause]--I knew we were paying--but it's very difficult to say for sure whether you overpaid or not, because on the one hand, I think we did overpay, but on the other hand, if somebody else had purchased Temple, it would have done Eastex very serious damage, because we would have had trouble acquiring this incredible
