He married Julie Stein's daughter, Jean Stein -- the Music Corporation of America, MCA. They're now divorced.

In any event, he called me up -- I can't give you the year, but it was the year he was running for governor in the convention system or the primary system that applied when Gene Nickerson was also the candidate. I guess it must be the same year that Howard Samuels was the candidate, I guess: it's hard to put all these things back together. I had stayed out of that race. I had told people, “I really am not interested in that race. I'm just not going to get involved.” There wasn't any sense in getting involved in that race. You don't have to get involved in everything. People would call me. It's very complimentary that people call you and ask for your support and tell you how important you are -- just so long as you're not overwhelmed with the falsity of the statement. That's the problem in politics, and I'm sure I'm as guilty as some but I hope have a better hold on reality than some do, that you become overwhelmed with your own importance.

Not very long ago (I'm digressing here but it's important) -- just about two weeks ago -- I was at a cheese store. I buy cheese from the same place since I came to the Village in 1956 called Murray's Cheese Store on Cornelia Street. I generally get there about 9 o'clock on a Saturday morning, and in the same line was the wife of Ed Gold, Anna Lee Gold. We've been friends since ‘58 I saw Ed that afternoon: we had lunch here at my house.
