he always is on the right, and they have to have someone on the left because this program is intended to be a clash: never grays -- it's always blacks and whites in terms of issues. So the people who support me are saying, “Why aren't you yelling? Why aren't you screaming? Why aren't you more emotional?” And I say, “Well, there are a couple of reasons why. The first one is I wouldn't be effective. Nobody could hear what I was saying. And secondly, what happens is this: there are many people who watch that show on a Sunday night -- about 500,000 to 750,000 on a Friday night, and I am always on a Friday and sometimes on a Sunday, too. The mail that I get as opposed to the mail that Abend gets when he's debating with others like Riesel or maybe even Sorenson, who has a different style, too -- his is low-keyed too, but it is the kind that is insulting of his adversary; people don't like it. I mean he's arrogant; he puts them down. Whereas I always try to blend in some humor. I'm going to get to this pornography in a minute because it's one of the little episodes. I always try to blend in a little humor, because I think it's always helpful if you can work in humor into anything. And then I'm on regularly.

One of the first programs related to pornography. And they always try to work it in with the news. That night at 42nd Street they were closing down the porno shops, which they do like every Thursday. (laughs) Suddenly they want to get a little news and they want to do something, so they'll close
