This was entirely new to him. He didn't know that I was interested in medical research.

And I told him that I had been ill a great deal in my childhood with and of? illnesses that were not treatable then but are treatable in simple ways now. As I got into the philosophy of why he should support more funds for the Institutes of Health, as they were the most important factors adding to the average length of life of the American people, he became quite impatient and said, “These discoveries aren't made with money” I replied, “I know of no one who has made any discoveries recently who wasn't paid.” He was unsympathetic and said he resented the fact that I seemed to think that I was more interested in medical research than he was. Actually, I think it wasn't this at all, and I probably will really never know why the interview was so unsuccessful. During the beginning of the interview he had received word that someone was waiting to see him and whoever it was, the news of him had left him obviously irritated. In any case, he surely had no idea of the total picture of the importance of medical research; he also seemed to resent what he called “pressure” and complained that someone who worked for me used too much pressure. I don't know where he got this;
