Part:         Session:         Page of 1143

with the Pope three years ago and went to see him.

Q:

On the subject...

Lasker:

On the subject of birth control.

Q:

She asked for it on that basis?

Lasker:

Well, she went with a friend of the Pope's. She got to know the Papal delegate in Washington, and she got to know somebody who was a friend of his, and the friend made the appointment, and she had a private audience with the Pope. And a year ago she had another one with him. I think it would be interesting for you to get from her exactly what transpired during these audiences.

Q:

It's a remarkable development.

Lasker:

Now, the best thing that has happened in the planned parenthood area in 1963 is that the State Department and the AID have changed their attitude and are willing to give information to countries asking for information and have made a statement to this effect.

Q:

This is a reversal, isn't it?
